It's my job, not theirs...

In his weekly radio address today President Obama shared his plans for America's schools. According to a related article from USA Today the goals of our nation's schools are:

"One of the things America has not been clear about is what k-12 is supposed to do...we're saying K-12 is supposed to prepare kids for college and meaningful careers."

"By 2020, all students graduating from high school would need to be ready for college or a career."

"Unless we take action — unless we step up — there are countless children who will never realize their full talent and potential," Obama said during a video address on Saturday.

"The blueprint calls for states to adopt standards that ensure students are ready for college or a career rather than grade-level proficiency..."

As if it's their job to see that our children "realize their full talent and potential." Just when did my children become the government's responsibility? It seems that Mr. Obama has an entirely different view of the purpose of education than my husband and I do.
The education of children for God is the most important business done on earth. It is the one business for which the earth exists. To it all politics, all war, all litrature, all money-making, (emphasis mine) ought to be subordinated; and every parent especially ought to feel, every hour of the day, that next to making his own calling and election sure, this is the end for which he is kept alive by God--this is his task on earth. ~R.L. I wonder if being a wife and mommy will be an option.

  1. One of my biggest fears is that our government will take away the opportunity to homeschool my own children without a bachelor's or master's degree.....I can so easily see this idea entering the heads of so many politicians and even our president, it scares me. In the eyes of many of our leaders, I know many women would seem "unfit" to educate their own children in the way they see fit.

  2. Thankfully the Lord has provided for such challenges to our homeschooling freedoms through organizations such as Homeschool Legal Defense who stand in the front lines defending our rights, and your future rights, to education our children as we see fit. :)

Having reread my post, I'm wondering just who it is that is going to decide what a "meaningful career" is?
